Apricot

It was the colour of the season
when the fashion was the short ball gown.
I chose mine for that very reason
in taffeta, tulle and fluffy swansdown.

Alone I stood, aloof from the crowd,
till you came and knelt and stretched out your hand.
As I tried to pretend I was superior and proud,
you asked if you might touch an angel so grand.

There I stood in my apricot frock,
thinking and dreaming I was not a wallflower,
and gazing in wonder at this handsome young knight (originally cock)
who was trying to reach me in my ivory tower.

A short period of bliss and then you had flown
to where the real angels keep watch round a throne.
