Having a midnight feast was a school tradition throughout the years, so the time came when we were in Middle Four that we planned our feast. Daygirls were asked to become involved by supplying us with cans of baked beans and on the appointed night we sneaked down to the kitchens when all was quiet and stole slices of bread to eat with the beans.
On the approach of midnight we moved to a quiet part of the school and spread a rug on the floor and laid the food out on it. We were all seated and ready when the door burst open and there was Miss Edwards gathering up the rug containing the food and after she had ordered us back to bed she carried the rug away! Another tradition was that every girl had, at some stage, to sit up all night. As I couldn't manage without my sleep I postponed that event till my final term. No teacher came to order me back to bed! Elsewhere, I have written about the night Freda disappeared and how we were all woken up and had to remain awake till she reappeared.
